Today I went to the Tenement Museum which is what I was trying to do yesterday. This museum is located in the Lower East Side. In the mid 1800's it was a German community, but I chose the tour which discussed the Moores, an Irish family that moved into this new apartment building in 1869. Apartment buildings were invented in NYC. I don't know how one person could live in this 3 room space and certainly not a family.
The Tenement Museum is located just off of Delancy Street. Does anyone remember the movie "Crossing Delancy"? It has Amy Irving in it and she is set-up with a pickle man. He owns a business that sells nothing but pickles. I asked my tour guide if she knew of any pickle shops and she told me one was a couple of blocks away.
So, the first picture is of a tenement building on Orchard Street and the second/third are of the pickle shop

I do remember that movie! Did you have a pickle?
ReplyDeleteI bought an aged pickle which is one that has been in the barrel for 3 months, pickled celery, and my favorite......pickled okra. Thanks for the comments,
ReplyDeleteYou would be a blast to travel with, finding the neatest things! I love pickles (esp sweet) but will pass on celery and okra. Bleh.
